Wow, didn’t realize how few and far between these Rants come. I’ll try to do them more frequently, but for now, don’t worry. It doesn’t mean that Guile’s been a happy camper…
Our target for today:
Now, that name may not mean much to anybody not living in Canada, but you should read the rant anyways. Anybody who’s ever had a company inconvenience you because they couldn’t live up to their own promises will know what I’m talking about.
I signed up for Shaw’s new Shaw@Home cable modem service around the middle of August. And figured two weeks should be enough time for them to get here and hook the stuff up. (They won’t let you do it yourself). Guess what? I was wrong. Got a phone call the other day (almost two weeks after I signed up in the first place) and they set up the appointment for… September 25th. Apparently the demand was “greater than anticipated”.
Now, I’m not terribly upset about that. I’ve survived on a 33.6 modem (which is such a piece of crap it could be the subject of its own rant; hint: never buy a modem labeled “WinModem”) for this long, I can survive another month. What pisses me off is that they promised free service until October, but only if you sign up “NOW! NOW! RIGHT NOW!”. Well, that’s just great. I’m gonna get five free days, not the month or so they promised. That’s what’s pissing me off.
Needless to say, I’m gonna have a little chat with the installers about my missing month. Bottom line: It ain’t my fault they couldn’t live up to their own promises.
Will the little guy (relatively speaking) win out against the Great Corporate Conglomerate? Or will they crush Guile like they crush their competition? Stay tuned for the results.
Addendum: [26 September 1998] Didn’t get the free month, but did get the installation charge knocked down from $50 to $25. After it had been lowered from $150 as part of the initial “NOW! NOW! RIGHT NOW!” promotion. I’m calling this one a draw.
