My God-Given Right

If you’re a fan of straight-up power metal, you know who Helloween are. If you’re not a fan of power metal, what the hell is wrong with you?

Helloween roared out of Germany in 1984 to become pioneers of power metal, and their releases Keepers of the Seven Keys Part I and Part II from 1987 and 1988 are classics of the genre. What Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer were to thrash, and Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, and early Def Leppard were to NWOBHM, Helloween (along with Blind Guardian and Stratovarious) were to power metal.

Which makes it awesome to see they’re still alive and kicking and releasing new albums 30 years later. Here’s their latest, the title track off My God-Given Right.

The video – yeah, it’s all kinds of silly, looking like a mash-up of Star Wars and Resident Evil: Extinction, with some Planet of the Apes thrown in for good measure. Plus, the female lead was obviously chosen for her looks over her acting ability. She doesn’t say a word and still comes off as stilted and unnatural. But the music is awesome, and that’s what really matters.

Enjoy!
