Creating a Spectral Minion
“Spectral minion” is an acquired template that can be added to any humanoid or monstrous humanoid creature. A spectral minion retains all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here.
Challenge Rating: As base creature +1.
Alignment: Any evil.
Type: The creature’s type changes to undead. Do not recalculate the creature’s base attack bonus, saves, or skill points. It gains the incorporeal subtype.
Armour Class: A spectral minion gains a deflection bonus equal to its Charisma modifier. It loses the base creature’s natural armour bonus, as well as all armour and shield bonuses.
Hit Dice: Change all of the creature’s racial Hit Dice to d8s. All Hit Dice derived from class levels remain unchanged. Spectral minions use their Charisma modifiers to determine bonus hit points (instead of Constitution).
Defencive Abilities: A spectral minion retains all of the exceptional defencive abilities of the base creature save those that rely on a corporeal form to function. Spectral minions lose any supernatural defencive abilities. Spectral minions gain channel immunity, darkvision 60 ft., the incorporeal ability, spell resistance equal to 12 + 1 per character level or Hit Die, and all of the immunities granted by its undead traits. Spectral Minions also gain the obsession ability.
Obsession (Ex): All spectral minions are bound by unfinished business, unable to join the progression of souls without completing their personal quest. This could be anything from researching and studying in a sunken library, guarding a specific post for a hundred years, or fighting a never-ending conflict in a haunted battlefield.
When pursuing this specific goal, or when presented with obstacles to achieving that goal, the spectral minion gains a +2 morale bonus on any skill check, ability check, attack roll or saving throw that has a direct impact on the goal or in overcoming that obstacle. Philosopher spectral minions might gain the bonus on Knowledge checks; guardian spectral minions might gain the bonus on attack rolls when defending a post from invaders.
Speed: Double the base creature’s movement, not including the speed penalty of armour or equipment. Spectral minions are extremely fast.
Melee and Ranged Attacks: If the base creature was armed with a weapon at the time of its death, it retains an incorporeal version of that weapon upon transformation into a spectral minion, and it functions as it did while the creature was alive. If the creature was not armed, the spectral minion can make no physical attacks.
Special Attacks: Spectral minions retain all the exceptional special attacks of the base creature, but any relying on physical contact do not function. They lose spellcasting and any supernatural and spell-like abilities upon their transformation to undead status.
Abilities: Dex +4; as an incorporeal undead creature, a spectral minion has no Strength or Constitution score.
Skills: Spectral minions have a +4 racial bonus on Perception and Stealth skill checks.
